The search for the most interesting leaders and specialists takes place not only within a country but also across borders. To achieve quick, reliable and efficient results, an international search can be successfully concluded in partnership with a recognized Executive Search and Leadership Development firm such as AIMS International.

In this series we present our highly experienced colleagues, your partners in Executive Search. In this interview we spoke to two such colleagues, Lenka Písačková from the Czech Republic and Valér Chladný from Slovakia.

Lenka and Valér often work together on searches spanning the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

They will outline how cross border Executive Search between the countries works in practice.

What is Czech and Slovakia generally like as countries?

Czech Republic and Slovakia share a rich cultural and historical background. Our languages are as close as Norwegian and Swedish. We decided amicably to become two nations 1993. Czech Republic (10.8 million inhabitants), with its capital in Prague, is known for its vibrant urban life, stunning architecture, and strong industrial base. Slovakia (5.4 million inhabitants), with its capital Bratislava, is known for its Old Town, featuring picturesque landscapes like the High Tatras, and is gaining recognition for its growing tourism and service sectors.

How is the economy developing in the Czech Republic, Lenka?

Czech economy is diversified. There is a long-standing tradition of a strong industrial sector, with significant contributions from sectors such as machinery, electronics, and automotive manufacturing.

The Czech Republic adopted economic reforms swiftly. The reforms focused on rapid privatization, deregulation, and opening the economy to foreign investment. This “shock therapy” approach brought quick results but also social challenges. The country retained its national currency, Czech koruna (CZK), opting for monetary independence, allowing it greater flexibility in responding to economic changes. The Czech National Bank thus retains control over monetary policy.

The country has attracted substantial foreign investment, particularly from its European neighbors, and is projected to experience steady growth. Many foreign companies have invested in Czech industry, reinforcing its role as a manufacturing hub in Europe. The Country invests heavily in innovation and research. A stronger foundation in R&D supports a higher share of high-value jobs, giving the economy a competitive edge in advanced sectors. The Czech economy grows steadily with low unemployment and increasing wages, which help sustain domestic consumption.

How would you like to describe the economy in Slovakia, Valér?

Slovakia initially implemented reforms at a slower pace than the Czech Republic, which delayed foreign investments and economic growth. Our country adopted the Euro in 2009, simplifying trade and investment with Eurozone countries and contributing to price stability.

Slovakia is heavily industrialized, boasting one of the highest car production rates per capita in Europe. Significant investments from companies like Kia Motors, Land Rover, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Volkswagen, as well as Volvo have bolstered its industrialization, though this has made the economy more dependent on a single sector. On the other hand, my country trails in research and innovation. While industrial production is strong, there is room for improvement in digital transformation and technological advancement.

Slovakian economy has experienced faster growth but lags in living standard relative to Czech Republic. Unemployment was traditionally higher in Slovakia, though it has decreased in recent years.

Lenka, what is your background and what made you become an Executive Search consultant?

I have a Master’s degree in Economy and International Relations from the University of Economics in Prague. My career in Executive Search began over 20 years ago. I joined AIMS International in 2006. Since then, I have grown with the company, becoming the Managing Partner for the Czech and Slovak Republics. I was also part of the Board of AIMS International for a period.

Throughout my professional journey, I’ve been drawn to the transformative role Executive Search plays in helping organizations thrive. Connecting with people, understanding their aspirations, and guiding them to roles where they can make a real impact, has always been immensely rewarding. Each search presents a unique opportunity to match talent with the right challenges. I’m inspired by the trust clients place in me to shape their leadership teams across all sectors.

At AIMS International, we provide ‘Leadership for future impact,’ and it’s a privilege to support both Czech and foreign companies in reaching their potential through strategic talent acquisition.

What about you, Valér?

I bring over 22 years of experience in Human Resources, with more than 18 years in senior management roles for international organizations. My journey began with a focus on building HR strategies, setting up processes from scratch, and supporting organizational growth in industrial and production settings. Over the years, I have had the privilege of shaping the HR landscape in fast-growing companies, leading teams, and managing complex multicultural environments across Slovakia and Czech Republic.

My transition into Executive Search felt like a natural evolution. After spending many years developing internal talent and understanding the impact of effective leadership on business success, I realized that my skills in identifying potential could help other organizations find the right leaders to drive their growth. Partnering with AIMS International and as a partner of Czech & Slovak Republics has allowed me to use my industry insights, along with my extensive network, to help clients ‘Find & Grow’ leaders who will make a meaningful difference in their organizations.

How would you describe Executive Search in the Czech and Slovak markets?

The Executive Search market in the Czech Republic and Slovakia is characterized by a growing demand for top-tier talent in both well-established and emerging sectors. Companies across industries are increasingly seeking executives who can drive digital transformation, enhance operational efficiencies, and navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving economy. In the Czech Republic, where the market has a larger base of multinational operations, there’s a high demand for executives who are not only experienced in local markets but also equipped to align with international standards. Slovakia, with its booming industrial sector, sees a strong need for senior leaders with specialized technical and managerial skills to support the continued growth of sectors like automotive, technology, and manufacturing.

Describe the candidate market?

Generally, both countries experience candidate-driven markets, meaning companies must invest in building strong employer brands and offer competitive salaries to attract and retain the best talent. Flexible work arrangements, professional growth opportunities, and a supportive company culture are becoming standard expectations among high-caliber candidates.

Executive Search is a well-established service used by companies seeking leadership talent in competitive industries. The process is rigorous, confidential, and highly personalized, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates are considered. Our approach emphasizes local expertise, cultural alignment, and sector-specific knowledge, making executive search essential for companies that aim to build resilient and effective leadership teams.

What is the most important advice for a foreign (Swedish) company wishing to establish or expand its presence in your countries?

For foreign (Swedish) companies interested in Czech Republic or Slovakia, understanding the local culture and business landscape is key. Establishing strong local partnerships, navigating regulatory requirements, and building relationships with local talents are vital steps. Understanding local business etiquette and communication styles is essential for successful negotiations and building relationships.

Most commonly, a Swedish company is already a client of AIMS International in Sweden. Our colleagues in Stockholm know the customer and act as ambassadors. They make sure that the recruitment timeline is adhered to and the client’s special requests are met. We do the practical work of Executive Search locally. The benefits are that the process is safer, faster and more efficient. Engaging local experts can aid in bridging cultural gaps and enhancing operational effectiveness. A well-connected executive search partner provides a strategic advantage, helping to source skilled professionals who understand both local markets and international business expectations. By collaborating with AIMS International, we can offer tailored consulting services to foreign investors, including market entry strategies, local partner identification, and compliance support, ensuring a successful transition into our markets.

Thank you Lenka and Valér!
